In a discussion paper on essential fatty acids, Health Canada indicates:
• ALA and LA are necessary for cell membrane health and for the proper functioning of the brain and nervous system
• ALA lowers the level of triglycerides and reduces cardiac artery blockage, reduces the risk of atherosclerosis, and decreases overall mortality and risk of cardiac death
The American Heart Association in its 5th Annual Conference on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology shows that a diet high in ALA (Omega-3) improves the functioning of arteries and allows them to better expand.
What is the difference between fish oil and Oh Mega!Oil?
EPA and DHA are the Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, while vegetable oils contain ALA. As Health Canada states, ALA is a precursor of EPA and DHA, meaning our body produces EPA and DHA from the Omega-3 found in Oh Mega!TM Oil. This is why the Omega-3 found in fish is not considered an essential fatty acid. Moreover, heavy metals and other contaminants are currently a concern for fish products, especially during pregnancy- precisely when Omegas are vitally needed nutrients!
Also, there is emerging evidence on potential benefits against conditions like diabetes, depression, cancer, lupus, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis
The World Health Organization states that omega-3 has positive effects on:
• Blood pressure
• Cardiac function
• Arterial compliance
• Endothelial function
• Vascular reactivity
• Cardiac electrophysiology
• Inflammation (Potent anti-inflammatory effects)
Sacha Inchi
Sacha Inchi is a plant from the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. This plant grows in warm climates (10°C min–36°C max) and it presents favorable characteristics for reforestation. It grows from 100 (low jungle) to 2000 (high jungle) meters above sea level. Its life span is up to 10 years. The plant has a fruit with a peculiar star shape, which contains the seeds from which the oil is extracted. After the extraction of the oil the “cake” is ground to obtain a flour of a protein of high biological value. At this moment the flour is mostly used for animal feed. But researchers are looking into ways to use the flour for human consumption.
